Automatic early detection of wildfire smoke with visible-light cameras and EfficientDet

The ability of EfficientDet, a framework developed in 2019 for object detection, to automatically detect smoke plumes at distance several kilometers is demonstrated. Recent articles have raised concerns about the effectiveness EfficientDet fire detection applications, with over 40% false positives reported. proposed model achieved true rate 80.4% and false-positive 1.13% on testing set. data set used this study, which includes 14,125 21,203 non-smoke images, one largest, or even its kind reported literature images containing plumes. Our results surpass those previous study that same are more reliable realistic than by others, may seem better, but were calculated using smaller less representative sets.
